Michael de Forest’s current series of wooden masks and bowls was inspired by stories of human connection and despair. His interest in graphic black and white photographs from his parent’s newspaper reporting and 1950’s photos of New York gritty street scenes by free-lance photo-journalist Arthur Fellig, aka: Weegee, led him to an exploration of police mug shots. De Forest referenced found police mug shots and spontaneous black and white family mug shots he took at his parent’s 60th wedding anniversary. These form the subjects in his masks and bowls for his show, “Offenders, Transgressors, Misbehaviors and Family”. His carved and painted pieces investigate the contrast of vulnerability and immediacy present in both those apprehended, separated, and alone and those connected and supported by family.
