Audrey Smith, a collage artist from Towson, Maryland began experimenting with collage in 1990 after discovering the work of Max Ernst and the Dada art movement. Around 2007 she began creating collages in a Moleskine sketchbook as a creative exercise, and it soon became her main focus. Smith says, “Collage and assemblage marries what I love about painting and sculpture, and it creates for me a constant challenge as I explore new methods and materials.” Smith’s collages are small works brightly filled with juxtaposing birds, anatomical drawings and often topped with polka dots.  Audrey Smith will be in attendance for her opening night June 7th at gallery  6 pdx.

“In the myth of sorting the seeds, Aphrodite presents Psyche with a granary of various seeds (millet, corn, beans, etc). Aphrodite then asks her to sort them. Overwhelmed with the task, Psyche weeps in disappointment.

Meanwhile, some ants came to the rescue by swiftly separating out the seeds on her behalf. The sorting is akin to taking stock of priorities and options, of revealing likes and dislikes. It is a critical step of any journey, no matter how mundane or epic.

As any act of sorting makes clear, the works presented at Pushdot will vary in medium and in subject, always coming from the same intention: to clarify what fuels my art practice. Navigating the art world, art history and art in general society can be overwhelming. With doubt as the cornerstone of my studio practice, I am continually compelled to recheck my boundaries, goals, technique and purpose.²

Catherine Haley Epstein is an artist, curator and writer. In her projects the medium matters only as a vehicle for meaning, whether it be the written word, drawings, oil paint, or books.  Titles and objects, placement and intention all have a say in the work.  Her projects, artwork and writings can be found at mindmarrow.com and at wordpress.mindmarrow.com.

Figures, land and water will treat the viewer to a myriad of scapes. While the figures in Fielder’s pieces might be still, the water and land of Stahl’s scapes flow.

This June showing should be an inviting journey in interior and exterior scapes.

April 15th- June 15th: Featuring Susan Dimitman: Digital Photographs and Monotype Prints

Susan will be presenting abstract digital photographs from images at Fort Stevens, WA and monotype prints inspired by the landscapes near Crow’s Shadow Institute of the Arts  on the Umatilla range.

Susan writes about her recent work: “…When the light is right and the image isolated, there’s a breathless, heart-quickening moment as the camera shutter snaps and my vision is captured. It’s a thrill that beckons for more. Photography is my first love, but these days I get the same joy of anticipation from a monotype rolling off the press.  There it is—a unique picture, born of some subconscious feeling at that moment in time.

I’ve been making photographs for over 40 years, starting with black and white silver gelatin prints and moving on to digital giclée color on textured paper. Recent work at Crow’s Shadow Center for the Arts near Pendleton provided the alchemy for my recent prints.”

Susan’s photographs and monotypes will be exhibited though June 15th. A reception for the artist will be held First Thursday May 2nd from 5-9 pm.

Wildlife artist, Peter Mathios has been painting since he was a child. Inspired by memories of hunting with his father in Northern California, his favorite subjects are ducks and other waterfowl. He has been named the International Ducks Unlimited Artist of the Year (’09) and Oregon Ducks Unlimited Duck Artist of the Year (’08). He has been published in Wildlife Art, US Art and California Waterfowl magazines. Mathios makes his home in the Willamette Valley and is a full-time artist. Image: Still Waters

Philip D. Smith is a native of Portland, OR and has been painting for over 35 years. He was born legally blind and has limited vision in only one eye. Because of this, his innate perception of color, light and depth is amazing as demonstrated by his paintings.

Phil paints in acrylic and oil and has explored a full range of subject matter including landscape, seascape, still life and portraits. He is also commissioned artist. He has participated in several regional art shows including Artists with Disabilities, Beaverton Arts Commission, Canby and Welches Art Festivals and the Audubon Wild Arts Festival in Portland.  Israel Hughes who turns 71 in May, will be presenting 70 works of art, with the 71st work hung on his birthday, Friday, May 24, 2013, at 6pm, all are welcome to view the hanging of this most recent work.

The 70 works will be hung Salon-style, patterned after Academie royale de peinture et de sculpture exhibits in the Salon Carre at the Louvre, Paris, France in the early 18th century.

Dr. Bob Pliny
A Taxonomy Of Things

Dr. Bob Pliny has titled his exhibition: A Taxonomy Of Things.  Themes for this group of paintings have to do with our natural ability to create meaningful objects of thought from information provided by our senses.  These images put forth ideas about how we recognize things, imbue them with meaning and organize them into paradigms that explain how the world works and what our place is within it.  As in previous exhibitions, the viewer is strongly encouraged to adopt an attitude of “Wonder and Delight” in confronting these visionary paintings.

A native Oregonian, Jerrol Eshleman goes by the name, Shorty Barnett for his role as lead singer of “Shorty And The Mustangs” and Dr. Bob Pliny in all matters related to his visual artwork.

His band is scheduled to perform during the Artists’ Reception.
